Dhul-Hijjah 6: How to Protect Yourself from Satan

Allah commanded Yahya Ibn Zakariah (John the Baptist), peace and blessings be upon him, to command his followers to do five things. One of those was:

“I command you to remember God. The parable of the one that does this is like a man that is being pursued by his enemy in haste. So, he runs to a fortified garrison and walls himself up inside away from them. Similar is the slave; he cannot protect himself from Satan except with the remembrance of God.” (At-Tirmidhi)

Satanic Whispers

Day in and day out, we have enticements, whispers, things and even people that call us away from goodness, productivity, and faith.

The greatest of these is Satan. Given respite until the Day of Judgment, he calls people to follow his footsteps. The first step he took away from Allah was being too proud to obey Allah. After this, he took an oath to entice man to go astray, to obey him, to disfigure God’s creation and to disfigure themselves.

On the Day of Judgment, those that obeyed him and followed in his footsteps will seek him out. They’ll ask for help on a day when there is no help but God. Satan will respond to them:

{And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, “Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allah ] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment.} (Ibrahim 14:22)

Dhikr Versus Whispers

 Dhikr versus whispers is the same as Signal vs. noise. Ask yourself: What is the ratio of signal to noise in my life? Whose call am I answering? Am I allowing influences in that open the door for Satanic whispers and heedless acts?

Abu Hatim Ar-Razi said: “The pillar of obedience in this life is to mend your innermost self and to leave off those things that corrupt your conscious. Intelligent people know that its obligatory for them to take this seriously, protecting their hearts as it sways left and right, because the worst of times and the most bitter of tastes is experienced when the heart is corrupt.” (Rawdat al-Uqala)

Ask yourself: Where is your heart being kept? In an impenetrable fortress or in the line of attack? Who are you opening the doors for; the One whose promise is true or someone else?

Taqwa – Living the Main Purpose of Ramadan

Taqwa is a major purpose for the month of Ramadan. The people of taqwa are those who do the things that they are commanded and avoid the things which Allah has made prohibitive.
