Plight of Refugees: Sudanese Boy, 16, Washed Up on French Coast

Abdulfatah Hamdallah, a 16-year-old boy, originally from war-torn Sudan, was found washed up on a French beach Wednesday, August 19, after a boat capsized while trying to reach UK.

This distressing news comes hot on the heels of a report authored by 25 Conservative Party MPs who referred to refugees crossing the channel as ‘invading migrants,’.

Days later, a poll showed that 49% of Brits had ‘no sympathy at all’ or ‘not much sympathy’ for refugees making their way to UK shores. Thankfully these troubling attitudes are not held by all.

Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu wrote on Twitter, “To every self-righteous racist & xenophobic British ja**** demonizing refugees & asylum seekers, the death of this 16-year-old Sudanese boy should be on your conscience, if you have any.”

Behind the complex set of reasons why “a 16-year-old risk death to flee Sudan for a better life?” Afshin Rattansi pointed out that the UK currently has sanctions on Sudan.

Twitter user MsMetamorphose adds, “A 16-year-old boy from Sudan dies in the Channel, seeking refuge in the country that colonized his.”
