On Muslim Heritage Month, Hamilton Launches Anti-islamophobia Campaign

The city of Hamilton has launched its first anti-Islamophobia campaign to recognize and celebrate the important contributions that Muslims make in the province.

The ‘Salam Hamilton’ campaign kicked off on October 3 as Canada marks Islamic Heritage Month.

It comes as an educational endeavor to confront racism, with a particular focus on challenging Islamophobia and its tangible impacts on the daily lives of Muslim residents in Hamilton, In The Hammer reported.

“Honored to be standing alongside the #HamOnt Muslim community today as we launched the City of Hamilton’s first-ever anti-Islamophobia campaign,” said Mayor Andrea Horwath in a tweet. 

“The goal of this campaign is two-fold – to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the Muslim community while also raising awareness about important issues of hate and tolerance,” Mayor Horwath added.

Salam Means Peace

The campaign features local food, entertainment, a bazaar, family activities, and information booths. 

The planning group deliberately chose the theme of ‘Salam’ or ‘peace’ to encapsulate the spirit of inclusivity and compassion that defines both Hamilton as a city and the rich Islamic heritage that contributes to its diverse tapestry.

Every October, Canadian Muslims mark Islamic Heritage Month with events to celebrate and educate about the rich Muslim heritage and contributions to society.

The IHMC Theme for 2023 is “Celebrating Muslim Women in the Arts & Sciences”.

It aims to honor the historical contributions of Muslim women through the ages and their influence on the progress of the Arts, Sciences, and Society.

Taqwa – Living the Main Purpose of Ramadan

Taqwa is a major purpose for the month of Ramadan. The people of taqwa are those who do the things that they are commanded and avoid the things which Allah has made prohibitive.
