A Michigan Islamic center is inviting neighbors to visit their space and meet Muslims during their open house event, planned on Saturday, October 21.
The event, hosted by the Islamic Center of Midland, features cultural displays, guest speakers, and more.

“The goal is to focus on unity and cultural exchange,” Raheef Alturkmani, who is co-leading the planning and execution of the event, told Catalyst Midland.
“It’s an opportunity to unite and focus on the things in common, and without necessarily trying to change anyone’s opinion or convince anyone with any ideas. It’s just an open invitation for people to come, visit and get to know the Muslim community better.”
Regular Events
Inviting people to share their culture, the event isn’t the first for the Islamic center which hosts regular events throughout the year, such as weekly Friday Prayer and weekly events during the month of Ramadan.
“This is our opportunity to bring knowledge to our Midland neighbors, and invite them to have a better understanding of who we are, and where we came from,” Alturkmani said.
“Many of us are not originally from Midland, but many of us consider Midland home.”
Alturkmani hopes the event can open doors to future conversations and interactions inside Midland community.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming all of our Midland neighbors, and can’t wait to see and interact with our guests,” he said.
Islam requires all neighbors to be loving and cooperative with one another, sharing their sorrows and happiness.
It also enjoins that they should establish social relations in which one can depend upon the other and regard his life, honor, and property safe among his neighbors.
