Friends Influence Your Children

Friends and peers are going to influence your children. Their thoughts, passions, hopes and their behaviours will rub off onto them.

Our religion puts importance on friends, peers and companions. In the Quran 43:67, Allah says: “close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous.” This verse shows us how impactful friends can be and how friends will blame each other on the Day of Judgement.

Through this, we can see the impact of peers on children. When children start to get older, their parents become less influential and their peers start to get more influential. When children enter adulthood it reverses. Their peers become less influential and their parents start to become influential again.

There is a critical time in childhood when their friends are more likely to be impactful on them than you. How do we help our children be successful in choosing good, influential friends?

Firstly, we shouldn’t eliminate friends. We may want to remove these friends but our children need to learn how to deal with people and form relationships.

Secondly, we should help them choose good friends. When children are younger we are influential on them so this might help them to see who is good for them in friendships. We usually choose people who have similar values so this is important to consider. Who are we inviting in our social bubble?

Talk to your kids about peer pressure. This is very important for us to do and we should encourage them to say no to people who pressures them into doing things.

Teach your children that it is good to be different. Peer pressure is all about fitting in. However, we can look to our own religion for examples of people who did not bow to peer pressure. We can also use sports stars as an example also.

Praise your children for their achievements and efforts. Also encourage them in areas they are good in and lack in. this will build their confidence.
