Losing Family to COVID, Doctor Makes Vaccine Plea to Muslims

Amid reports that a large population of ethnic minorities are refusing to take Covid vaccine, Muslims across the UK are leading campaigns to dispel fears and correct disinformation about it.

A Birmingham Muslim intensive care doctor has revealed that members of his family died to COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Wasim Mir was speaking in a plea by Green Lane Masjid and Community Center in Birmingham to the Muslim community to take the vaccine and safe lives, Metro reported.

“This disease doesn’t discriminate by race, age or gender,” Dr. Mir, who practices in Birmingham, said.

“Many of my close family have passed away as well as my friends. Covid 19 is a real disease and it kills real people. It is therefore important that we come forward and fight this disease so we can save the lives of all of us as a life of a Muslim is very sacred in our deen [way of life].

“We must trust our health professionals, our health regulators and scholars. Therefore I encourage you to take the vaccine.”

The masjid said, “The preservation of life is one of the core objectives of Islamic law (maqasid ash shariah) and Islam.’ Worshippers were reminded that ‘we have an obligation to take every step possible to ensure that lives are saved, and the public is safe.”

Birmingham’s landmark Green Lane Masjid and Community Center issued a new statement earlier this week to clear skepticism surrounding COVID vaccine and urge Muslims to seek medical advice.  

Muslim Efforts

The statement follows a recent spike in the number of people who tested positive for COVID-19.

Different Muslim groups have been leading campaigns to encourage people to take the vaccine and protect lives.

Earlier this month, the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) okayed the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine for COVID-19 for Muslims.

In December, BIMA also approved Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for Muslim communities, confirming that there are no animal products in this vaccine.

On another level, scholars from some of the most influential Islamic seminaries in the UK have also issued fatwa saying that the new Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is halal.

Taqwa – Living the Main Purpose of Ramadan
