Muslim Volunteers Help Kentucky after Devastating Tornadoes

Group of Muslim volunteers have been on the ground to help people of Kentucky after 35 confirmed tornadoes resulted in 1000 homes destroyed in the worst tornado events in the state’s history.

“As Islamic Relief coordinates its response with local officials and other disaster response orgs, we have the people of #Kentucky in our thoughts and prayers. #Kentuckytornado,” Islamic Relief USA wrote on twitter.

On Friday, Dec. 10, multiple tornadoes formed from the same weather system created a tornado outbreak affecting six states: Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee.

At least 88 people have been confirmed dead across five states, 74 in western Kentucky alone, and the death toll could rise “significantly,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said on Tuesday.

Disastrous Effects

The damage in Kentucky is widespread, with over 28,000 homes without power and some towns up to 75% destroyed.

“Our Disaster Management Team (DMT) has mobilized to provide relief in Kentucky and is responding to needs like disaster assessments and providing shelter to those who are victims of the storms,” IRUSA wrote in a statement.

Volunteers from other Muslim charity groups were also on the ground to provide the much-needed help.

“35 confirmed tornadoes have resulted in 1000 homes destroyed in Kentucky alone. ICNA Relief is on the ground and working hard to assess, mobilize and provide live updates,” Islamic Council of North America (ICNA) wrote on twitter.

“ICNA is already on the ground in Kentucky. We offer everything from tree-cutting services to mobile health clinics. Clinics are not working as they are supposed to, so the medical clinics really helps to facilitate the need for the community,” ICNA added in a Launchgood campaign.
