Hudson County Superior Court Gets Its First Muslim Judge

An American Muslim civil rights lawyer has been nominated to the New Jersey Superior Court in Hudson County. 

“A trailblazer from Jersey City, Judge [Kalimah H.] Ahmad’s appointment is an inspiration to us all,” Selaedin Maksut, Executive Director of the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ), said in a statement cited by Insider NJ.

“We congratulate Judge Ahmad for creating a more inclusive judicial system, serving our communities, and pursuing justice for all.

“We will continue to inspire more American Muslims to pursue judicial, legislative, and executive offices to ensure they are represented at all levels of government, creating a more inclusive America.”

The State Senate confirmed her nomination to the New Jersey Superior Court on December 17. She will be sworn in on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. 

The Muslim Legal Fund also congratulated Ahmad on the new appointment.

Kalimah Ahmad is a lawyer specializing in civil rights, employment, entertainment, and sports law.

She attended Montclair State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in English and Teacher Education Certification as a Dean’s List student. She went on to receive her Juris Doctorate in May 2005 from Seton Hall University School of Law. 

In 2011, she served as Jersey City Councilwoman-at-Large by former Mayor Jerramiah Healy.

Ahmad is also the former Board Member and Regional Director of the Garden State Bar Association. She currently serves as a Board Trustee for the Educational Arts Team and a legal advisor to the Hudson County Correction Facility in NJ .
