Brothers, Stop Commenting on Women’s Clothing

You have seen the comments on social media where brothers feel the need to comment on a women’s clothing. What should be done about this?

The internet provides a sense of anonymity for people when they comment. People say online what they would never say in real life. What we need to remind people is that if you are more concerned about other people’s mistakes more than your own mistakes, then that is a disease within you.

There is an hadith from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that says whoever considers everyone else to be misguided and deviated, then he is the one who is misguided and deviated.

There is a fine line between preaching the truth and being a critic. Preaching the truth should be done generically. It should never be done specifically. You do not call out someone’s mistakes and say this is preaching the truth. There is an hadith in Sahih Bukhari that states that when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wanted to raise a point about someone’s mistake he would not specifically talk about that person.

If you have authority over someone, you are parents, you can tell your children not to do something. If it is your sister, brother, cousin, friend, then you can take them to one side and advise. It should not be done in public. If you do not know someone at all then the best thing to do is to be silent and consider your own mistakes and issues. If you need to then you can make a complete generic statement.

Brothers, stop commenting on women’s clothing unless it is your own sister or daughter. Talk to her in private. But do not comment on strange women’s clothing. If she is not related to you just zip it. You are not the right person to be preaching and teaching to young ladies.
