We hear Zakat talked about a lot in Ramadan. So what is the difference between Zakat and Zakat al-fitr?
Scholars have separated zakat into two categories. There is zakat of the body and the zakat in the money or the wealth. The zakat that is referred to in Ramadan is called Zakat Al-Fitr. This zakat is given at the end of Ramadan and is given to the poor people.
Islamically it is around four handfuls of an amount of food, rice, barely, something staple. In our times, some scholars say taking a meal that is the same value of those four handfuls of food. This is roughly $8-$10 nowadays.
This is the Zakat of Ramadan that Muslims are obliged to give.
