US Muslims React to the Breonna Taylor Verdict

Although she was only twenty-six-years-old, her name and legacy has shaken the world.

Breonna Taylor was an emergency room technician with a passion for helping people heal and a woman with a drive to succeed.

Our lives were forever changed on March 13, 2020 when Breonna was fatally shot after three plain clothes officers served a no-knock warrant at her Louisville apartment. 

According to police documents, Louisville Metro Police Department officers Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove shot Breonna Taylor during a botched raid on her apartment.

During the raid, one of the officers was shot once in the leg by Ms. Taylor’s boyfriend. The officers returned fire into the apartment and fatally murdered Breonna Taylor. 

Daily Protests

Every day for three straight months, protesters have taken to the streets demanding the prosecution of the officers who fatally shot Breonna Taylor.

Amongst this group of protestors, American Muslim activists also marched alongside Louisville, Kentucky residents demanding justice for Breonna Taylor.

“We alongside the protesters of Louisville have done everything we could. We organized, we canvassed, we trained folks, we got arrested, we made the city and its leaders uncomfortable demanding justice for Breonna Taylor,” Linda Sarsour wrote on Instagram.

A grand jury decision came Wednesday after nearly 100 days of protests and indicted a former Louisville police detective for endangering Breonna Taylor’s neighbors by recklessly firing his gun during a raid on her apartment in March, but the two officers who shot Breonna Taylor were not charged in her death.

“We reject this unjust decision by the grand jury and urge federal authorities to intervene in the case,” said CAIR-Kentucky Chair Waheedah Muhammad.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said, “This is not justice. Innocent people were not merely endangered during this police shooting. An innocent person was murdered. If Kentucky will not hold all the responsible officers accountable for the death of Breonna Taylor, the Justice Department must do so.”

Taqwa – Living the Main Purpose of Ramadan

Taqwa is a major purpose for the month of Ramadan. The people of taqwa are those who do the things that they are commanded and avoid the things which Allah has made prohibitive.
