The World Longest Walkway is in Mecca.

If you have read about the Muslim pilgrimages Hajj and Umrah, then you may know about a rite called the Sa’i or Saee.

It refers to the ritual of walking back and forth seven times between the two hills of Al-Safa and
Al- Marwa.

In fact Muslims perpetuate this ritual in remembrance of the actions of Hajar/Hagar the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) peace be upon him.

Hajar (Ismail’s mother) was alone and running out of water. Consequently, Hajar had to climb on the top of the hills to try to spot any travelers. As she found no one, she heard Jibreels voice (the Angel Gabriel) beside her baby. Jibreel hit the ground until fresh and pure water emerged from it. She later dug a well around the spring, which was known later as the well of Zamzam.

This video shows you the evolution of this path took throughout the years.

The houses and shops that were along the original path were removed to make place for the pilgrims.

They built an enclosed air conditioned walkway of 394 meters long and 20 meters wide.

As well it has a wheelchair course and another for electric cars to help elderly and people with a reduced mobility.

During the pilgrimage season, 600 000 pilgrims performs the Saee rite between Mounts Al-Safa and Al-Marwah every day.

It is  mandatory step in the pilgrimage, but Muslims don’t have to run like Hajar did.

“Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘Umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]
