Interview With a Calligraphist – The Beauty of Lettering

Historically the Islamic calligraphy has been developed and enhanced with the need to write down the recitation of the Qur’an. It includes different types of scripts: Arabic, Tuluth (Ottoman), Persian.

However, Islamic calligraphy is not limited to religious texts. Indeed there are many creative possibilities, for example ornament and embellishment.

This video is about Eleanor Aisha Holland who, at the age of 18, fell in love with the calligraphy she saw in the city of Istanbul.

She is now teaching Arabic calligraphy and she says that her students are all very enthusiastic even if they don’t speak a word of Arabic.
