Islamic Relief Plans Muslim Youth Climate Change Roundtable

The impact of climate change throughout the world touches on every aspect of life, from food and water security to migration, employment, and economic stability.

Putting faith in the rising generation to make the right choices, Islamic Relief UK (IRUK) and Greenpeace MENA will host a climate change roundtable for Muslim youth next month.

Planned to be held on November 8, the event comes as part of the Ummah for Earth Alliance Islamic Relief and Greenpeace MENA.

“This roundtable… is an opportunity for young Muslims to gather during an important time for global climate action as it coincides with COP 26 negotiations,” the event page read.

“A time where leaders from across the world will be discussing progress made and set priorities in combating climate change.”

The upcoming 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland is scheduled to be held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 12.

The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Several calls have been made for climate actions recently.

Earlier this month, Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb, Pope Francis, and 40 faith leaders came together to draw attention to the “grave threat” facing the world from climate change.

They made the appeal on Oct. 4 in a joint message signed in the Vatican’s Hall of Benediction, which was decorated with plants to mark the occasion.

The World Health Organization has also described climate change as the “single biggest health threat facing humanity”, outlining 10 recommended climate and health actions for a healthy and green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Muslim organizations across the UK and Ireland also united in a call a week ago for world leaders to take a swift, effective action against climate change.
