Jabir Ibn Hayyan from Alchemy to Chemistry

You have probably heard about Jabir ibn Hayyan by his Latinized name Gerber while studying chemistry at school.

Indeed he was one of the main patron of alchemy and the foundations of modern chemistry in the early Islamic period. Notably his works greatly influenced the medieval European alchemists and chemists.

Here is a nice animated video from Islam 1001 narrated by Professor Jim Al-Khalili to teach our kids and ourselves about the father of chemistry, his followers and what his work lead to.

As he worked on what became the base of the elements table, Jabir Ibn Hayyan believed that metals were formed in the Earth by fusion of sulfur (giving the hot and dry qualities) with mercury (giving the cold and moist).

Moreover from his numerous books which detailed his experiments, we knew that he used test tubes and other shaped glass containers that he had developed himself.

Most importantly he and other Muslim scientists (like Al-Razilater) worked on developing processes such as calcination, distillation, amalgamation, creation etc…
