Have we ever thought of why a non-Muslim is born into a non-Muslim family and a Muslim one into a Muslim family? What is the fault of a human born into a non-Islamic religion? What good is with me to have a Muslim faith since my birth? Do I have pure faith?
Many times these questions come to my mind whenever I see the huge number of the people who converted to Islam and practice it in a far more competitive manner.
Why it is that the person who spent a great deal of their life in a non-Islamic belief system converted to Islam and became a more competent Muslim than a traditional one?
The answer lies in exploring the verse of Qur’an:
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam – from their loins – their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we have testified.” [This] – lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, “Indeed, we were of this unaware.” (Al-A`raf 7:172)
This ayah significantly depicts the fact that the commitment of humans to Allah is the first covenant and the messages brought by all the Prophets are basically the second covenant primarily meant to revive that first covenant. It further opens up the verity of the message that a human needs to explore through his individual journey of truth at a conscious level what has already been committed to by the individual on a subconscious level. All humans are equally vulnerable to whether or not they accept the oneness of Allah.
Qur’an is the purest and most refined embodiment of the second covenant. It is the ultimatum of our guidance, with the last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final truth till the day resurrection for all mankind. There is no doubt in it.
Idealizing the religious journey as individuals, through our own seeking, putting Allah as our prime significance in life enables us to discover the energizing faith of first covenant, the one deep within us.
Journeying from a Muslim by coincidence to a Muslim by choice is to truly discover Allah. It is to attune oneself to the frequency of faith and to realize the Prophet’s Muhammad (peace be upon him) guidance as our eventual salvation. This individual journey is of utmost importance, and all the philosophies and sciences are fallible, unable to gift humanity with answers to two basic questions:
What are you doing on this earth
What will happen to you after you die?
These answers are found only in a search for faith, not to be taken for granted.
O soul that are at rest! Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), so enter among my servants, And enter into my garden.” (Al-Fajr 27: 30)
